Taking a Leap

← Back to Journey

I'm not sure exactly what I was expecting but I certainly wasn't expecting this. Since launching the website on Tuesday the 2nd asking for expressions of interest I have heard from over 60 individuals representing over 200 horses. From as far north as Geraldton and south as Albany and Esperence.

The beginning of something new often brings brings excitement with a dash of"what if this doesn't work" in the background. Some days the doubt takes over the excitement, the hope. Other days the hope triumphs and you find yourself inspired to take another step forward. Last Tuesday was one of those days.

I had been working on the Red Dust and Rein website for a couple of weeks, imaging what a business trimming full-time would look like. It was my preferred path but I also was applying for jobs closer to Perth to satisfy the doubt. With an upcoming job interview for one such job I decided to launch the website with a post on a Facebook group, just to gauge the interest and get some idea of whether or not I could make it work.

The outcome was overwhelming and I am immensely grateful for everyone that has taken the time to reach out. The response has given me a great deal of confidence but has highlighted a new challenge. How do I then organise and plan my trimming runs without over-promising, letting people down, or exhausting myself?

For the moment my base is Narrogin with part-time work on a stud, some days responsible for morning and evening feeding making it hard to get out for the day to see horses. Other days I am responsible for just the evening feeding meaning I have limited time to get off stud and be back in time for the evening run. Building a full-time trimming run is the goal!

The answer for the now, it seems, is to start slow, organising to see one just one client and their horse/s at a time and attempting to schedule others around it.

This post is intended as an update to everyone that has taken the time to submit an Expression of Interest and to let everyone know that I am working through them. I am keen to meet as many of you as possible and build a regular, reliable run but it may take some time.
